It almost bewilders me when I look at how much media coverage and public interest is in celebrities. Of course, I engage in it occasionally, more so lately, and it really makes me wonder why. Partly it is because I am currently a PR major and it is part of my job to know current events, be it the Iraq War or Paris Hilton in jail. I don't know or care about these people, sometimes don't particularly like their music or movies, but for instance, even though i am sick of her name, the whole Britney Spears thing. She has completely spiraled downwards and each day and it something worse. Do I read it because it is constantly in the media, even CNN and Headline News... or because it is somewhat comforting to see that people, even with all the money, beauty and fame, still succumb to issues that I and people around me battle everyday. Whatever it is, it still amuses me how huge celebrities are ingrained in our culture and everyday matters. Like when Paris did go to jail, not only was the media coverage surrounding it amazing out of proportion, but then the media attacks the media coverage on it and how absurd it is. But what doesn't make any sense, is while they are doing that, they are adding more coverage to her case. When I first started in Communications, I was a little skeptical, especially of Broadcast Journalism because I do believe in conspiracy theories and the trick of editing in news coverage. How are you ever suppose to know who to trust? I think I want to move to Canada..
